Question: What is the Endocannabinoid System and how does cannabis make it work? Answer: The endocannabinoid system is a biological system which plays many important roles in the human body. It is also responsible for the physical and psychological effects of cannabis.
Scientists first discovered the system in the human body in 1967 while trying to understand the effects of cannabis, and named it the endocannabinoid system sometime in the 1990's for this reason. Science now says all vertebra: Mammals, birds, fish, and reptile have an endocannabinoid system in their body.
According to Science our endocannabinoid system creates 489 known, same or like components found in the live cannabis plant. When our endocannabinoid system stops producing one or more of these components we become sick with disease. Some Scientist say we are so closely genetically linked to this particular plant that we can supplement with the cannabis plant, to activate the process when our body stops producing these components. Some scientists speculate that if the cannabis plant was eradicated from the planet, all vertebra would become extinct.
The endocannabinoid system is a complex system believed to control all other systems in our body. It primarily consists of the CBI and CB2 receptors found throughout the body. CBI receptors are found throughout the body, but concentrated in the brain and spinal cord. These brain regions are associated to behaviors, appetite regulation, memory, and emotional processing. CBI receptors are also found in nerve endings where they act to reduce sensations of pain.
The CB2 receptors are found concentrated in the immune cells and in the peripheral nervous system. When the CB2 receptors are activated, they work to reduce inflammation. Inflammation is an immune response believed to play a role in all diseases and conditions.
The endocannabinoid system is involved with regulating many basic functions of the human body including: Appetite, metabolism, pain, mood, sleep, movement, temperature, memory and learning, immune function, inflammation, neural development, neuroprotection, cardiovascular function, digestion, and reproduction, to list a few.
Some scientists believe the overall function of the endocannabinoid system is to regulate homeostasis, mental and physical balance. It is best described as the ability to maintain stable internal conditions necessary for survival.
