Question: Is cannabis (marijuana) used as medicine the same as industrial hemp?
Answer: Science says it is genetically different although they come from the same plant: Cannabis Sativa L. Much like we belong to the human race but genetically different with unique characteristics.
For medical marijuana use patients use Cannabis Sativa L: Sativa, Indica, Hybrids, and Hemp.
Sativa is highest in THC, attaches to the CB1 receptors in the brain managing the central nervous system and is what most patients use for daytime medicine to treat fatigue, mental health issues, low motivation, creativity, and euphoria, etc. Indica is what patients use the second half of the day and treats the body with components attaching to the CB2 receptors in the blood managing the organs and immune system. Indica treats acute pain, muscle spasms, insomnia, nausea, increases dopamine, etc. A hybrid just means one parent came from the Sativa family and one parent from the Indica family so you have 50% of the attributes from both families. Sativa and Indica can have THC 5-30 % giving mind altering effects but can be made into non psychoactive products. Cannabis in its natural raw form is non psychoactive until the plant is heated to 315°.
Hemp is legal in all 50 states and requires no medical marijuana card to consume. Our country use to know the difference between cannabis and hemp but the DEA has blurred the lines according to Hemp and Marijuana Myths & Realities by David P West, Ph.D. Anyone with more than an acre of land in the United States was required to grow hemp for the war effort clearly noted in history. Hemp is technically from the same family (species) however it is a different variety or subspecies and is incapable of being “mind” altering with THC at 0.3-1.5%. Dr. West also states in his report 92-96% of all cannabis confiscated by the DEA the past ten years is HEMP. Billions of dollars from the “War on Drug” money has been spent to eradicate legal hemp, mistaken for the illegal cannabis.
All Cannabis Sativa L provides nutrition and treats hundreds of symptoms and serious health conditions.
The true difference is in its use. Hemp can be made into more the 50,000 products. Its fiber is the longest, strongest, and most durable of all natural fibers. Hemp cultivation requires no chemicals, pesticides, or herbicides. Hemp produces four times as much fiber per acre as pine trees. Hemp tree-free paper can be recycled up to seven times compared to three times for pine pulp based papers. Henry Ford showed how a car made of hemp was 50 times stronger than steel and can run on hemp fuel only.
Hemp is easy to grow and conditions the soil where it grows. CA NORMAL in 2013 reported cannabis uses 0.04% of all agriculture water in California. In the book, “The Emperor wears no clothes” by Jack Herer talks about how hemp can save the world. “If all fossil fuels and their derivatives, as well as trees for paper and construction were banned in order to save the plant, reverse the Greenhouse effect and stop deforestation; Then there is only one annually renewable natural resource that is capable of proving the overall majority of the worlds paper and textiles, meet all of the worlds transportation, industrial, and home energy needs, while simultaneously reducing pollution, rebuild the soil, and cleaning the atmosphere all at the same time.. And that substance is- The same one that did it before Cannabis Hemp”.
More than 50,000 products and items can be made from hemp i.e. ships, rope, twine, cordage, and sails,
Textiles, and fabrics, fiber and pulp paper, art canvas, paints, varnishes, lighting oil, bio mass energy, automobiles and the fuel to run them, food oils and protein, building materials and housing, biodegradable replacements for plastics, and toxin free cleaners to name just a few.
This November two initiatives will be on the ballot to legalize cannabis. Only one of the initiatives 01-14-2016 AZFMR addresses industrial hemp. Arizona needs a new industry to get us out of our serious budget problems, fund Education where Arizona is 48th in the Nation and our Social Service programs where we rank 50th, and create jobs for Arizona citizens and families.
Twelve generations of our family have called Arizona home. Arizona has always been known for the five “Cs”: Climate, cattle, copper, cotton & citrus, it is time to add the sixth “C” CANNABIS- Industrial hemp alone will turn our state around.
